“When Lisa visited our school, she was great with the kids. I would recommend having her visit any classroom where students love to read and are looking for putting their ideas and inspiration to work immediately. Abby Sunshine was a good dog and her being there was a new twist on the school day!”

“Lisa’s visit was truly enjoyed by the children.   The approachability of the story made it motivating for the students as writers.  The subject  was perfect for the children.  Lisa’s activities gave the children an important glimpse at how a writer begins and made all that she spoke about immediately applicable.  Her activities were fun for the kids and helped them become more confident as authors.”

“It was such a pleasure to have Lisa visit our second grade students and share the published story and video clips of her beloved pooch, Abby Sunshine!

Lisa did a wonderful job of getting the children actively involved in the prewriting process through visualizing, sharing, and planning.

My class was very focused on writing and illustrating a “trick” they could teach Abby. The tricks ranged from the ordinary to the extraordinary. Even I couldn’t resist the desire to join in the fun! The children worked very diligently on the story planning guide that Lisa provided, and I look forward to the stories that follow in class next week!”

“Having Lisa visit our classroom and share her story was really inspiring to the students. They enjoyed the use of illustration and photographs in the book. They liked that Lisa used her own dog and experiences for the book. In the words of one student, “It was beautifully done.” Naturally we started thinking about how to use her ideas to create our own pet stories!”

“Before Lisa visited our classroom, I thought that the students would  be engaged in good story about her dog, Abby Sunshine. By the time the visit was done, I was surprised at how responsive my students were. Not only did her book demonstrate a fun and interesting story, but the in-class discussion was one of the best we’ve had all year! Her writing exercise helped my students begin their own stories and tapped into the author in each of them!”

“My students really responded well to Lisa’s story. I liked the book and it certainly held their interest! What I particularly appreciated was that it was a catalyst for good discussion in class. We talked about dogs, bookwriting, creativity, and the kids asked many good questions. I thought they made some connections that were big!”

“Lisa’s presentation is wonderful! The author is in sync with the children and the routines of a classroom, perhaps this is due to her once being a classroom teacher herself.  Lisa provides an age appropriate lesson that follows the reading of her book.  The student’s still speak of Abby Sunshine from time to time as if they have known the dog all their life.”

“My students loved having Lisa visit our classroom.  It was a treat for them to meet a children’s author and to have her read her book to us.  Having a dog as the main character always helps!  Lisa was great at having the students’ share their thoughts and insights — they could have talked about the book for hours!

We had fun following up on Lisa’s visit by writing a book of our own — What We Would Teach Abby Sunshine

It was a special treat to have Abby Sunshine visit our third grade classroom with Lisa. My students loved listening to the story, and watching Abby demonstrate a few of her tricks. They were very interested in seeing what a book looks like before it is bound and sold in a bookstore, and loved being able to ask an author questions. I would highly recommend having Lisa and Abby for a visit. What a great way to get students excited about writing!”
