6-28-10 Power of Soccer

Abby Sunshine has recently gotten to participate in the making of a short (two and a half minutes) home video with her good buddy, Renae, and feline sisters, Thorndyke and Hemple.  Please enjoy this clip, and especially the exciting animal chase scene in the latter part of the show!

6-26-10 Before and After

When Abby sees the “chuck-it” ball thrower, she becomes fixated on it and has one thing in mind. What is it, you ask? I think you know. She is ready for a good old running game, on a very hot day.

Above is Abby BEFORE the fetch game. She is alert, has a quick response and though well-behaved, she is really assertive in getting her game started.

Below is Abby AFTER the fetch game. Now Abby is panting up a storm, eyes squinted and she’s found cool grass as refuge from the heat. She’s obviously not in her own backyard. If she were, she’d be in her little, blue pool, basking in the water as refreshment. As much as Abby loves to fetch the ball, she will take breaks to cool down.

6-25-10 A Dog’s Game

Hey, what’s Abby Sunshine doing today? Oh, fetching a ball, what a surprise. If I dare say so, I think Abby loves this game and would play it every day. She has never told me this, but sometimes actions speak louder than words.

If someone were to guess your favorite game, would you have to tell them? Or could they easily figure it out by knowing you?

6-24-10 A Dog’s Life

A dog’s life. . .what does that mean? When I researched it, I found that that it means a miserably, unhappy existence, as in “He’s been leading a dog’s life since he fell on bad times.” Hmmm. . . How did this become the meaning?

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Abby Sunshine - 1 BW - Poofy Tail - 6-23-10

Let’s study these photos and find if Abby is leading “a dog’s life.” As you can see, she is again taking to the country roads. Her tail helps us to find her more easily!

Yes, she’s running toward us, getting closer with each stride.

Look at her go! Come on, girl!!

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Abby Sunshine - 4 BW - Running Back - 6-23-10

Does her gait make you feel she’s miserable? Does her uplifted tail and perky ears make you think she’s feeling low? When I see her, I feel uplifted, I feel a joyful energy in her run. Does she lead a dog’s life?

She’s arrived at last, and runs right by me! Occasionally she does this. To us humans it seems like a tease, like the handshake where the person extends a welcoming hand, then quickly pulls it back to slick back their hair.

When she does this “fly-by,” she turns around and asks for more.

Fetch anyone? Be miserable with me.

6-23-10 On the fast road

There goes Abby Sunshine AGAIN. She just loves to run. She doesn’t jog, she is on the FAST road. When she is fetching a ball, it seems like she sprints as fast as she possibly can.

She slows down a bit on the return run. She looks at the person throwing the ball, getting ready for the hand-off.

What a good dog! She hands it right to Renae. She has been trained that way. She will give it to an outward reaching hand. She doesn’t drop it on the ground for you to go fetch.  You need not go chase a ball down the road, or go anywhere out of your way. Abby Sunshine brings it right to you. What a gal!

I like this image of Abby looking straight up at Renae, poofy tail all fluffed out, waiting patiently for Renae to get a grip on the ball.

Another toss down the road. Based on what we can see in this close up, the toss has probably just left Renae and is starting on its journey. Abby is getting the 10-20 (location) of the ball, ready to momentarily take off.

6-22-10 Abby on a Gravel Road

What could be capturing the attention of these two curious kids? Is it a gentle breeze on a lonely gravel road? Could it be the song of a meadow lark or a wren? Hmmm. . .

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Abby Sunshine - What's happening on this gravel road - June 22, 2010

Of course, it’s Abby Sunshine! She is bolting down the road a million miles an hour! OK, maybe that’s an exaggeration. She’s charging down the road as fast as a cheetah! OK, maybe that, too, is an exaggeration. How fast is she running? I’m not sure, but she’s much faster than those I’ve seen try to race her.

Now where could she be headed after such a lovely jaunt in the country?

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Abby Sunshine - Abby running on a gravel road 2 - June 22, 2010

Oh, I wonder if she is getting a drink. It looks like it from here, with her fluffy tail upright, wagging and even blowing in the breeze!

Sure enough. She gets thirsty, too. In fact, it’s making me kind of thirsty. Doesn’t she make that water look cold and thirst-quenching? Imagine the sound of a dog slurping it up. I think I’ll go get a drink.

6-13-10 Don’t Fence Me In

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Abby Sunshine - Fenced In - 6-13-10

Oh give me land lots of land under starry skies above

Don’t fence me in

Let me ride through the wide open country that I love

Don’t fence me in

Let me be by myself in the evenin’ breeze

Listen to the murmur of the cottonwood trees

Send me out forever but I ask you please

Don’t fence me in

Just turn me loose let me straddle my ole saddle

Underneath the western skies

On my cayuse let me wander over yonder

Till I see the mountains rise

I wanna ride to the ridge where the west commences

Gaze at the moon till I lose my senses

Can’t look at hobbles and I can’t stand fences

Don’t fence me in

[ guitar ] Don’t fence me in don’t fence me in

Just turn me loose…

Don’t fence me in

This version of “Don’t Fence Me In” is my favorite!

6-5-10 Ramsey Visit

Abby Sunshine got to visit some old friends at Ramsey. She first visited some of these students last year while her story was “in the works.” She was warmly received by the kids, performed a few tricks and let them know what a well-behaved dog can do! Not only was Abby Sunshine on her best behavior, the students rose to the occasion of having a classroom canine. They were calm with her and talked to her clearly so she could understand what they were saying. Needless to say, she got a few treats today. . .

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever - Ramsey - June 5, 2010 - Students and Abby

What is Abby thinking? Is she looking for more goodies? Or is she basking in all of this loving attention? Hard to say. . .could she be day dreaming about a game of fetch?
