Abby in the wind

The fur on Abby’s tail is allowing us to “see the wind!” It reminds me of this poem.

Who Can See the Wind?

Author Unknown

Who can see the wind?

Neither you nor I.

But when the leaves are trembling

The wind is passing by!

Who can see the wind?

Neither I nor you.

But when the trees are bending low

The wind is passing through!

Here is my Abby Sunshine version of the poem:

Who Can See the Wind?

by Lisa Monson

Neither you nor I.

But when the fur is fluttering

The wind is passing by!

Who can see the wind?

Neither I nor you

But when Abby’s tail is fanning so

The wind is passing through.

What is a new version that you can invent?

8-28-09 Abby Mowing?

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Abby and MowerWhat have we here? It looks like a hot, little duck toller. What else do we notice? Yes, thick green grass and a lawn mower. . . What could that mean? Put two and two together and not only do you get four, you also get a variation of the game of fetch!! Of course! Check it out-

Abby and Mower2As the mower moves slowly closer to Abby, she walks toward it, head-on, with ball in mouth. . .

Abby and Mower3Obviously that clever move worked, so the lawn mower operator stops and takes her ball. . .

Abby and Mower4Again. . .quick action, swish of the tail

Abby and Mower5Throw in a “stand-up. . .”

Abby and Mower6Keep an eye on the ball. . .

Abby and Mower7Show some flare. . .

Abby and Mower8Then go to the pool!! What do you do with the “same old stuff” to make it interesting? How do you keep from getting bored?

One thing about Abby Sunshine, she makes life a little brighter. She’s not boring which might mean she isn’t bored!!

8-26-09 Up North Again

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Abby in wheelbarrow This trip included some “roughing it” for Abby. You know her luxurious blue, plastic pool at home?? Well, here she had to make do with what was handy. The wheelbarrow seemed the only natural option.

Abby in wheelbarrow 2 It worked perfectly! Abby took a few minutes to cool off. . .

Abby in wheelbarrow 3 Now she’s ready for another game of fetch.

8-25-09 Dogs Up North

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Hank and AbbyYou may remember good ‘ol Cousin Hank. He visited Abby a while back; this time Abby is on his turf. Hank is a Labrador Retriever. He’s very playful and looks to Abby for a good time.

Hank and Abby 2 Yes, Abby is willing to play a game of fetch with Hank. Great!

Hank and Abby 3 However, if you were to hear the sound effects on this one, you may hear a “Grrrrr” coming from Abby Sunshine, though I hate to admit it. She was rather selfish in this game, and many other games during our stay with Cousin Hank. We had to work with her on sharing.

Abby is obviously a dog, so she handles a situation like this with some growling sounds, etc. What do you do when you don’t want to share? When you think someone is trying to take your stuff? Or just downright annoying you?? How does that work for you?

8-24-09 Summer Morning Buddies

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Renae and Abby

Renae and Abby Sunshine lay cozily in the morning hours. Will they get out of bed? From the picture, you may wonder. What I’ll tell you is that they’ve each been up and about already. For one thing, little Sunshine sleeps in a kennel, so this is surely not her usual routine. She’s already had breakfast, been running outside and greeted each of us. She’s not in a habit of sleeping with her buddy. Secondly, this isn’t Renae’s bed. Although Renae hasn’t been quite as active as Abby, she has been awake for awhile. Here she and Abby are curled up in a lazy morning setting, thinking about what to do on these last days before school starts.

Renae and Abby 2Of course the next important information needed for planning your day is the weather. As Renae eats her bagel, she and Abby Sunshine look out the picture window. What is the weather like today? Is it still raining? I don’t think so!

8-21-09 Rain Dog

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Abby

Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night will keep Abby Sunshine from her appointed game of fetch. And that is for sure. It has been raining here for three days (not so common- more like June weather, I think). In these pictures, it is actually raining fairly hard. As you may also notice, Abby still wants to chase that ball.

Abby 4She runs with a heaviness in her thick coat – absolutely soaked with water.

As she is waiting for the next toss, she sees I have the camera, so she puts the ball down, shakes off, and waits patiently.

How many of you have hair that curls in damp conditions? I wish I did- but anyway, Abby Sunshine has fur on her ears that “crimps.” It looks just like we put small braids in it, then took them out and voila!!- very stylish. This happens when she is wet.

8-19-09 Gillespie Center

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Lisa 1

The Gillespie Center is a beautiful building, surrounded by neatly kept gardens. This back window had a wonderful view. The Gillespie Center is a Community Center and Senior Center where everyone is welcome!   Kids & people of all ages. It is a place where you can remain visible and involved in the community. The aim of Gillespie Center is to present a wide range of programs that will appeal to everyone in the community.

After arriving, I took a few moments to enjoy the room, and review the book.

Lisa 2

Abby didn’t hesitate to make herself right at home. As you can see, she appears comfortable in front of the room! In this photo, we are starting our Abby Sunshine presentation.

Lisa 3

I briefly spoke, then read  A Day with Abby Sunshine. I talked with folks in a question/answer format. It was a really nice group- with some grandmas bringing in their grandchildren to meet Abby and hear the story!

Lisa 6

Some of the kids came up for a photo with Abby!

Lisa 7

Now Abby’s thinking, “what next?”

8-18-09 Letter from Michelle O.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

I couldn’t very well receive a letter like this without sharing it with all of you! I was so excited – it made my day!!

Letter from Michelle O

Long ago, before President Obama was president, I wrote a letter to the Obama family. It was shortly after the election and inspired by the announcement of their decision to get a dog. I suggested that the Obamas consider getting a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

As you probably figured out, that suggestion didn’t come to be –tough competition with Ted Kennedy giving them a Portuguese Water Terrier!

I’ve also included Bo on this blog. You may recall my entry from July 10th, entitled “A Real Water Dog.”

Anyhoo, Michelle sent me a letter and a picture of Bo, wishing me “all the best!” For this I am honored and shall endeavor to persevere on my journey with Abby Sunshine.

Thanks, Michelle. I, too, wish you all the best.

8-17-09 Abby Sunshine Turns Away

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers

Abby Turning Away

Have you ever been in a situation where you would rather just turn away? The conversation may not be “doing it” for you, and looking off to something more interesting seems just what you need? This could happen in a classroom, perhaps a lesson isn’t as exciting as you’d like, and to look outside the window may be quite a treat!

Well, Abby Sunshine doesn’t hesitate to turn when she’d rather be looking the other way. This has happened time and again. As you know, she’s so polite (well-trained, shall we say) that she sits when asked, but that doesn’t mean she always has to look at you after sitting.

Abby Turning Away2

Now you see she’s turned to the other side- to keep looking at whatever is more interesting to her than me with a camera.

Abby Turning Away3

And back again.

What do you think is so interesting to Abby Sunshine?

A clover flower?

Some ducks walking by?

A squirrel?

A toad?

Other ideas?? When is a time that you might rather look the other way?
